Resource Buildings – troops consume a lot of grain and are not harmed if you have 0 grain. If you want to have a good number of troops and be useful to your alliance in times of war, your grain per hour will be negative, so there is no point in building more than one farm. The other resource buildings are needed roughly equally (figure 1).

Mints/ Army Tents/ Hospitals – hospitals increase your hospital capacity and, in the late game, total matter health. Mints increase gold production, training speed and, at level 25, give a 2% bonus to troop attack. Army tents increase maximum troop training capacity, maximum troop number and troop defense (figure 2).

The percentage of bonuses to attack, defense and health are small and come late in the game so they can be ignored by new players. You need enough hospitals to cover your troop total, but mints are brilliant for their training speed. Army tents allow you to set many troops to build at once but apart from that, they’re not very useful until end game. You should consider these facts when deciding what proportion to build them in. 9 mints/ 6 hospitals/ 1 army tent is a good balance to have until castle level 25, but it's not perfect for everyone and should be tweaked according to your needs.

A single level 25 produces 38k grain.
Basic troops cost 1 grain to maintain.


So if somebody had a single level 25 field and 40k basic troops. That's 38k troops being fed and 2k starving but those starving troops are happy to hang around and starve because ??????

Anyone who thinks that's a good system is dumb as a sack of rocks.

Doubly so when you consider the source material devotes plenty of time to the problems of a starving civilian population and the problems of keeping an army provisioned.

  • Who will happily only eat wheat anyway? What about apples or other fruits.. or meat.. bread.. cheese.. beer..
    They should get a whole cooking system..! Also.. once troops consumed food, they shouldn't keep consuming.. I mean, who tf will eat non stop? And why only feed troops? The normal folks do not need to eat? Let's stop with making innocent children die of hunger! Food for everyone!!

  • You can use the surplus wheat (as you said, nobody keeps eating 24 hrs a day) for animal husbandry though, providing other sources of food in real life.
    And as a lord you have to basically supply provision for the army. Lords only supply food grains to the populace in times of dire needs like famine or such. Otherwise the civilian population is supposed to support themselves

Not sure I agree about the farms, if you're not planning on paying cash, how do you build more troops? At some point you run out of bonuses.

  • Unless you log in once a week, running out of grain is hardly even possible. I keep spending it in troops, researches, buildings and ship, and still maintain my total of coupons well above 300M. Even those days where I burn through it, in less than a couple of days it's back to where it was before, if not even more. There's absolutely no interest in having more than one farm. As said elsewhere and many times, if you want to keep your grain income positive, that means you'll have to play with only a few thousands soldiers, which is pretty much saying : you don't.

The problem with demoing a building is you can't swap it out for a different "style". For example I demoed a farm and it would not let me build a hospital. As of yet I have had no answer on that from a ticket I submitted. Why can't you replace a demolished outer building with any other outer building otherwise available to have been originally built?

    There are two different kind of buildings sets that you can build in specific fields outside of your castle! Some are made for ressources buildings, the other ones are made for mints, army tents and hospitals. You should check again, this is definitely not a bug.

I've never seen a system with so many weird flaws.

  • Every game of this type (and there are many) uses this same food mechanic. It isn't about realism, it's simply a game mechanic. As someone pointed out, it makes it so you have to constantly be farming for food (either via gathering, or via attacking other players) in order to progress. Also, doing it this way allows for essentially unlimited army sizes. If you had to maintain a surplus, it would be easy to calculate the maximum possible army size, and many of the play-to-win players would hit that within a few weeks of starting a new server.

    Since this game is ultimately about putting as much money in the pockets of the developers as possible, there is no reason they'd want that to happen. Hence, we have the system we have.

Hi luckyholland, troops are constantly eating grain as it is produced, unless you make more than they eat so that you will have surplus. Your troops will not starve to death, but you will need to keep bringing in grain for building, training, and research, and use it for what you need before your troops eat it all, which is sometimes a challenge in itself.

Agree with above. If your army is consuming more than the upkeep the troops should start dying until the production/consumption ratio reaches status quo again.

  • Agreed. The developers should place the community on notice that dynamic grain production and consumption will be a factor in troop health as of a certain date, and implement a troop health system that requires grain production to equal or exceed consumption. That would give the players time to reconfigure their outside structures to have more farms. There should also be a tax system that drains gold to maintain the city structures. If you don't obtain or produce sufficient gold to keep your city buildings up, they stop their functions until the tax is paid.

  • Wait til you reach midgame where you're relegated on relying on opening bonus resource packs to progress, whether it's construction, research, training, or crafting. Then get back to me if there aren't enough resource handicaps already even if grain is nerfed right now and there is no tax or upkeep cost on buildings.

  • NO , BAD IDEA, if you want to farm all day just to maintain your army, then go play such as evony ect. I like the mechanics of food supply in this game. easy to understand, no time wasted with a calculator / spread sheet, allows me to get on with the best bits of the game play.

Hi jeffwinchell,

You can demolish buildings in the outer area by clicking on the building, and then clicking the 'house with an x' icon in the bottom left corner. This will require a queue slot, and will take some time for the demolition to complete, which can be hastened.
