dw didnt work for one hero, but did for another

Anyone know the answer to this? A guy got kicked (at his request) from his alliance  today & joined my alliance to do a dw that I had set up for today. When the dw started, I was able to hit, but when he tried to hit, the game said "Event already played" and would not ever let him hit while I could continue to hit. Why would this happen?
