As an alternative you could just put together a facebook group, no coding at all needed. That\'s what we\'re doing in my guild right now If it works out we may switch to a forum later on but I don\'t want to put the work into building one until I see the facebook group getting used enough to need it wisper posted on 2014-01-25 13:15:45
and it hasn\'t been any work at all to set up my forum yet, it set it up for you, and because I\'ve used and moderated forums before I mostly know how to set the administrative settings to try to prevent most issues/problems.
only work involved seems to be if I want to change the style/formatting of the board, like how the buttons and headings look and background page color and background board colors and font type and size and color, etcetera.
things that should be easy to change because they are just formatting, not changing anything about how the board operates, have to know code to change.
there are like 20-40 premade styles you can choose from or start from and edit if you know how to edit the code.
so far just using the standard subsilver template seems to be going to work fine, and I can always change the colors/formatting later.
I don\'t want a facebook group because facebook uses real names and has tons of my info on there I don\'t readily give out to people.
When I joined facebook you had to actually know people and have them confirm it to be friends, and it was only for people who belonged to a college/university network.
so I have a lot of info on there and am very careful who I add and what I let them see.
my main issue with having a facebook group though, is that a group is just like the old facebook wall feature everything all jumbled together and no way to sort it search it or organize it.
Forums are far more organized, you can organize and even move/rearrange them later anyway you want to do so, and it says you can make a website as a companion to your forum if you want, and there is something called portals, which looks to be another word for expansions/add-ons/additional features you can add to your forum too, and I haven\'t tried any of them yet but it looks like they are all free too.
plus on forums you can have custom ranks and titles and avatars and smilies and all kinds of things, and have more room on screen to read what you are typing, and the ability to actually format what you type and actually have it in easy to read paragraphs and separated out, where as facebook has an annoying habit of when you hit the submit button, removing all the returns you entered and jumbling everything you typed into one lumped up mess.
